Potomac's Canal Closes Down in Stages This Fall While the Village Calendar Fills Up

Between now and December, things to do in Potomac shift from the C&O Canal to River Road and Seven Locks Road. The National Park Service is closing the river side in stages: one parking lot, one drained canal section and one schedule change at a time. Over the same weeks, Potomac Village and Cabin John Village have added events, new tenants and one restaurant that's due any time now. If you know the order these changes happen in, it's easier to plan a weekend.

The River Side Winds Down One Piece at a Time

The NPS conditions page was last updated October 9, 2026, and it shows a park partway through that process. Here's the sequence for the Potomac stretch, using dates from NPS pages:

  1. Already done. Great Falls canal boat rides are closed for the season.
  2. Partly done. As of the September 28 water-level update, the canal between Locks 3 and 6 and between Locks 22 and 23 had been drained. The section between Locks 17 and 22, which runs past the Great Falls Tavern area and Swains Lock, still had water. The park drains every watered section each fall to protect the stone masonry from freezing.
  3. October 13. The Swains Lock parking lot closes, and the park says the closure will last several weeks.
  4. Around mid-November. Water faucets in camping areas across the park are usually turned off for the season. The faucet at the Swains hiker-biker site is already off. The faucets at the Swains Lockhouse and the Great Falls Tavern restrooms are still on.
  5. November 26. Great Falls Tavern Visitor Center is closed for Thanksgiving.
  6. December 1. The visitor center switches to winter hours: Sunday and Thursday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Right now it's open Sunday and Wednesday through Saturday, so winter hours drop Wednesday. It's also closed December 24 and 25.

Why the Swains Lock Lot Is Closed for Several Weeks

The parking closure at Swains Lock, at mile 16.7, is part of a repair contract for damage from the July 8, 2019 flash flood. According to the NPS project page, that storm damaged the timber retaining wall at Swains Lock and eroded the embankments along the Great Falls entrance road.

At Swains, crews will replace the timber wall with an earth embankment topped with seeded topsoil. Along the entrance road, the work covers embankment repair, drylaid stone armoring, rebuilt shoulders, a new drainage pipe and stream-bed stabilization. The project is scheduled in phases across 2025 and 2026, depending on weather.

NPS lists Pennyfield Lock and Great Falls as the nearest parking alternatives, upstream and downstream. Both have their own issues:

  • Pennyfield Lock 22: DC Water is repairing the Potomac Interceptor nearby, and NPS warns of possible delays on Pennyfield Lock Road.
  • Great Falls entrance road on MacArthur Boulevard: The road stays open during the repairs, but there may be intermittent single-lane closures and delays. The current work fixes flood damage under the road, not the pavement. NPS is designing a separate, larger pavement project for later.

The Swains Lock hiker-biker campground is still listed as open. At Swains, the parking lot is the only closure listed.

What Stays Open Around Great Falls

The trails near Potomac are in better shape than the parking. At the Great Falls Tavern area, at mile 14.3, the conditions page lists the visitor center, entrance road, parking lot, restrooms, Great Falls Overlook, Olmsted Island Boardwalk, Gold Mine Loop and River Trail as open. Sections A, B and C of the Billy Goat Trail are open too.

Section A of the Billy Goat Trail is the one most likely to close without warning. NPS usually closes it when the Little Falls river gauge reaches 5 feet and reopens it when the gauge drops to 4.8 feet. For the latest trail status, the park points visitors to the Great Falls Tavern Visitor Center at 301-739-4200 during business hours.

Farther downstream, a few smaller notices affect walks that start closer to Cabin John:

Access point Current condition per NPS, October 9
Lock 10, mile 8.8 Parking and towpath open. DC Water is handling a sewer overflow nearby, visitors may notice odors, and the towpath may have short delays while equipment moves
Carderock, mile 10.5 Pavilion open. Parking Lot 1 is open with less space because of contractor staging. Restrooms are closed for emergency repairs, and portable toilets are available. The tunnel has had alternating one-lane traffic since July 27
Anglers, mile 12.2 Parking and restrooms open
Swains Lock, mile 16.7 Parking closed starting October 13 for several weeks. Hiker-biker campground open

Four Days After the Swains Lot Closes, Potomac Day

The first big inland event of the season comes the same week the Swains lot closes. The Potomac Chamber of Commerce has scheduled Potomac Day for Saturday, October 17, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. The car show is at 10220 River Road, and the Chamber also lists a parade, rides and a petting zoo. Its business-fair listing gives 9812 Falls Road as the registration site. The Chamber's listing doesn't give a parade start time or route, so check its page closer to the day.

The next morning, Cabin John Village holds Halloween on the Green on Sunday, October 18, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The center's weekly Norman's Farm CSA and pop-up market runs Wednesdays from 4 to 6:30 p.m. through November 4. Counting from today, that leaves four market Wednesdays: October 14, 21 and 28, and November 4. Each one also falls on a day the Great Falls Tavern Visitor Center is open. After December 1, the visitor center will be closed on Wednesdays.

Date Inland event Around the same time on the canal
Wed, Oct 14 Norman's Farm market, Cabin John Village Swains Lock lot closed as of Oct 13
Sat, Oct 17 Potomac Day, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Billy Goat Trail and Olmsted Island open
Sun, Oct 18 Halloween on the Green, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Visitor center open, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Wed, Nov 4 Last Norman's Farm market of the season Camping faucets due to shut off around mid-November
Sun, Dec 13 Community of Cabin John Holiday Party, 5:30 p.m. Visitor center already on winter hours

The park has its own holiday event, but no date yet. NPS says Holidays at the Tavern will have crafts, music, storytelling and historical holiday programs, and says the schedule will be posted later.

What's New, and Still Coming, Away From the River

The shopping centers have new tenants this season. At Cabin John Village, MoCo Show reported in early June that Carmen's Italian Ice was open at 11325 Seven Locks Road, Suite 113. Glowbar followed at 7951 Tuckerman Lane, Suite B, with a grand-opening community day on July 18. The center's directory now lists Puree Juice Bar, Hammer & Nails and Red Panda Art Studio as coming soon, with no opening dates.

The biggest pending opening is in Potomac Village. Maurizio's is moving into the former Renato's space at 10120 River Road. Store Reporter reported that it comes from Ted Xenohristos, Dimitri Moshovitis and Ike Grigoropoulos, who started Cava Mezze and the Cava chain. It's a sister restaurant to their Julii, Melina and Bouboulina at Pike & Rose. Executive chef Aris Tsekouras will run the kitchen. The coastal Italian menu includes linguine and clams, slow-braised beef, grilled branzino and chicken parm, plus a separate Negroni Bar menu.

The opening date has slipped over the year. In April, MoCo Show reported late spring or early summer. Bethesda Magazine reported July or August in May. As of this week, the restaurant's own reservations page says Fall 2026, and reservations aren't open yet. For now, there's no confirmed opening date or hours to plan around.

There's also one empty storefront on Seven Locks Road. Bethesda Co-Op, the natural-food store at 6500 Seven Locks Road in MacArthur Plaza, closed permanently on May 31 after more than 50 years, Bethesda Magazine reported. The same Bethesda Magazine report said Rodman's and other potential tenants had expressed interest in the space, and that the decision rests with the landlords. We haven't found a replacement announcement since.

A Late-October Saturday, Built Around the Closures

Here's one way to plan a Saturday around the current schedule:

  • Morning: Park at Great Falls instead of Swains. Walk the Olmsted Island Boardwalk to the overlook, then take the Gold Mine Loop or River Trail. Swains Lock parking is closed, so NPS names this lot as an alternative.
  • Midday: Drive up Falls Road to Potomac Village. On October 17 that's Potomac Day, which runs until 3 p.m.
  • Afternoon: Head down Seven Locks Road to Cabin John Village for Carmen's Italian Ice. Go back on Sunday, October 18, for Halloween on the Green.
  • Wednesday instead: Stop at the Norman's Farm market from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Only four market days are left.
